Dr. Palevsky's comments - What most people are unaware of is that the oral polio vaccine was discontinued in North America about 10 years ago, because too many children and adults were contracting paralytic polio FROM THE VACCINE. That's why we now use the inactivated, injectable vaccine in pediatrics in North America. The distribution and use of the oral polio vaccine, however, WAS NOT DISCONTINUED around the world. All countries in Africa are using the oral polio vaccine to vaccinate their children. In countries with poor sanitation, poor sewage systems, dirty water, oppression, war, poverty and nutritional deficiencies, the ingestion of the oral polio vaccine, which is eliminated through the feces, then spreads throughout communities that drink the dirty water in their towns, cities and countries. Essentially, in these countries with such poor hygiene and sanitation, they are CREATING the incidences of polio illnesses with the oral vaccine. Now, the country's health officials want to use the oral polio vaccine to vaccinate the population against polio, while the initial problem became exacerbated by the use of the oral polio vaccine. If only they would provide clean water, good food, better sewage systems, and decent hygiene to their population, many of the illnesses could be averted. In the meantime, the immune systems of the people living in these poor and oppressed areas can't be strong enough to withstand the bombardment of this oral vaccine. What a shame.....
